Motorola employees share what #EmbracingEquity means to them for International Women´s Day

Every year, we at Motorola, look forward to celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD), by recognizing and honoring the women who break barriers, make a difference in and out of the office, and are paving the way for other women at Motorola.

This year’s IWD theme is all about Embracing Equity and recognizing the difference between providing equal versus equitable opportunities. At Motorola, we are committed to supporting a gender-equal work environment as well as an equitable one, where all of our employees are given fair treatment, opportunities for growth, and access to resources.

To help honor this day, we asked women at Motorola what embracing equity means to them:

“Embracing equity is the way for us to create a more equal and fair world; a world where diversity is celebrated in all its power. We have the right and the responsibility to make it happen!” – Renata Altenfelder, Executive Director of Brand Management, MBG

“Providing equal opportunities based on gender is not enough. Embracing equity is about realizing people’s needs aren’t always the same and that it’s okay to need different things to succeed. Future generations should celebrate these differences, value diversity, and importantly, support inclusivity.” – Manika Parashar, Digital Copywriter, MBG

“Embracing Equity is a way for us to make every human feel equal in all terms. Providing equal opportunities and favorable resources to all living souls at workplaces would not just lead to the success of organizations but the success of humanity. We must take responsibility to foster the next generation to value and embrace equity in all aspects of life.” – Anjali Rawat, Global Social Coordinator, MBG

“It’s to be able to understand, not only from the differences but from the similarities who I am in this place, and what benefits I deserve for being a woman, millennial, Latina and leader. For me, as a Human Resources leader, it is a key element to generate an inclusive culture and thus enhance the empowerment and development of teams in the organization. We should continue with this journey of promoting equity because it is fundamental to confront the market and cultural challenges. First of all, we must start by promoting conscious and inclusive leadership.” – Laura Aguilar, Human Resources Business Partner, PCSD

“There is no “i” in the team. We should provide tools and support to narrow the social gaps our history has created. That means we should identify what and how we as Lenovo can promote a more equal workplace. Embracing equity is understanding our social responsibility for a fairer and better world for our children. It is leaving an improved world to future generations. Different minds foster different solutions, but just being diverse is not enough. We should equally foster professional development if we want to achieve greatness. Equity is also a great teacher of social awareness, empathy, and self-improvement. We should change our mindsets and realize we are active members of a changing planet. We are all responsible for the transformations we can promote and we should at least start in the workplace.” – Andrea Barral, Director of Human Resources for Latin America, MBG

Supporting our communities during Women’s History Month
At Motorola and Lenovo at large, we recognize the role we can play in supporting women in and out of the office, and in creating a gender-inclusive, diverse, and equitable workforce. To learn more about all of Lenovo’s 2023 IWD initiatives, please visit the Lenovo Story Hub.

New motorola defy smartphone with satellite messaging unveiled at MWC 2023

New motorola defy smartphone with satellite messaging unveiled at MWC 2023

Bullitt and Motorola debut the first rugged smartphone using the ‘Bullitt Satellite Messenger’ service, with advanced two-way satellite messaging technology, location sharing and SOS assistance

MWC Barcelona, February 24th 2023. Bullitt Group, the innovative British mobile phone manufacturer, in partnership with Motorola Mobility, a Lenovo company, has unveiled two new devices in the motorola defy rugged range that incorporate its unique satellite-to-mobile messaging service. The motorola defy 2, a rugged smartphone, and motorola defy satellite link, a Bluetooth device that provides satellite connectivity to any smartphone*, are designed for anyone that has ever been frustrated by a lack of cell coverage – whether travelling or participating in outdoor activities, or just in their daily lives.

Motorola and Bullitt have reaffirmed their commitment to innovation by integrating Bullitt Satellite Messenger into the new motorola defy range, showcased by both companies at MWC 2023. The motorola defy 2 is an advanced 5G rugged Android smartphone. Fast and responsive, it can cope with the stress of day-to-day life and outdoor adventures, while providing unique always-on connectivity.

“The defy range of rugged devices have broad appeal, from outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers to consumers who just want an ultra-durable phone,” said Dave Carroll, Vice President, Strategic Brand Partnerships at Motorola. “Adding assured connectivity with two-way satellite messaging broadens the appeal of the motorola defy 2 to anyone who finds themselves outside of traditional messaging coverage. We look forward to bringing the motorola defy 2 to a new segment of mobile phone users in the coming months.”

“We are delighted to be working with Motorola to bring another innovative solution to the defy range. Adding satellite connectivity to the defy 2 smartphone will give our core customers improved peace of mind, while the motorola defy satellite link, combined with the Bullitt Satellite Messenger service, brings accessible and affordable satellite messaging to everybody’s current smartphone. This is the definition of democratizing satellite communications and ensures customers are able to be in constant communication whenever they need it.” said Dave Floyd, Bullitt Co-Founder.

In addition to offering satellite connectivity and 5G, the motorola defy 2 boasts an extremely robust design. The phone is built to survive drops and falls, and is lab and real-world tested to heights of up to 1.8 meters, including repeated drops onto a steel plate in every orientation. It is impervious to dust, sand and dirt ingress, and highly waterproof, submersion tested to depths down to 5 meters and subjected to high pressure water jets, earning the product IP68 and IP69K ratings. And it is fully resistant to the elements. Put through rigorous Mil-Spec 810H testing, motorola defy 2 has been tested in high and low temperature extremes, in humid environments, in salt mist conditions, and has been put through vibration and tumble tests.

Featuring a hygienic device design, the motorola defy 2 can be cleaned and sanitized with soap and water, or even alcohol wipes without issue, and it includes Bullitt’s Hygiene+ technology – with all external surfaces of the device manufactured with materials blended with antimicrobial, antibacterial additives.**

Despite its robustness, the motorola defy 2 is slim and pocketable, and includes a large 6.6” FHD+ display, with20:9 aspect ratio and up to 120Hz refresh rate. It also includes a large 5000mAh battery, providing up to 2-days of power, and support for 15W fast-charging and Qi wireless charging. It is powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 930 octa-core 2.2GHz processor, with 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage – expandable with MicroSD cards. And it includes a triple camera array (50MP main sensor, 8MP ultrawide sensor, 2MP macro sensor) on the rear, and 8MP front facing camera. Launching on Android 12, the motorola defy 2 will receive two OS updates – and 5 years of security patches***.

“Satellite technology for any smartphone is the next big step in mobile connectivity, and what MediaTek has delivered with its stand-alone, standards-based satellite communications chip. We successfully worked with Bullitt, integrating our 3GPP NTN technology and chipset into the world’s first commercially available devices with two-way satellite messaging,” said JC Hsu, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of MediaTek’s wireless communications business unit. “It’s a significant advancement for remote users and emergency services, but this technology also paves the way for other unique smartphone satellite communication and connectivity markets.”

motorola defy satellite link: a robust Bluetooth accessory with Bullitt Satellite Connectivity

The motorola defy satellite link is a compact, lightweight, Bluetooth accessory with a handy attachment loop that allows any Android or iOS device to connect to the Bullitt Satellite Messenger service and utilize the full functionality of the application, including true two-way messaging over satellite, as well as location sharing and SOS assistance.

The tough, pocket-friendly device has also passed Mil-Spec 810H testing and is waterproof and dustproof with an IP68 rating. It has a 600mAh battery, providing sufficient battery life for multiple days of use. The design includes physical SOS and location ‘Check In’ buttons, allowing it to offer some functions even when apart from its paired smartphone.

Designed to give any smartphone the power of satellite connectivity, the motorola defy satellite link is an advanced satellite hotspot device that ensures peace of mind – wherever your next adventure takes you.

Bullitt Satellite Messenger: Featuring direct-to-satellite mobile phone technology for two-way satellite messaging

Bullitt Satellite Messenger is the first 3GPP standards-based satellite NTN or ‘direct-to-device’ service. The new motorola defy range will use the service to access existing geostationary satellites, providing affordable and continuous coverage internationally over existing, well-established infrastructure. With this new technology, customers can message over satellite, as long as they have a clear view of the sky.

The service works by utilizing the motorola defy 2’s hardware, or the motorola defy satellite link hardware connected to an iOS or Android smartphone, along with the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app, to send messages. It will first try to connect via Wi-Fi or cellular as normal, and if neither are found to be available, it will connect via satellite. Recipients without the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app can receive a message as a simple SMS to their existing phone, and are invited to download the associated Android or iOS app to respond.

The cost of the messages sent or received over satellite will be deducted from the satellite messaging subscriber’s plan with no cost to the recipient. There is no charge to either party when sending messages over an internet connection.

SOS Assist – with 24/7 access to emergency response centers provided by FocusPoint International – is available free for the first year at launch with the motorola defy 2 and is included in all plans. Messaging plans start from as little as $4.99/ month, with other flexible and heavier usage plans also available.

Pricing and availability

The motorola defy 2 will be available from Q2 2023 from selected operators across North America, Latin America and Canada. Priced from $599 including 12 months of SOS Assist.

The motorola defy satellite link will be available from Q2 2023 across international retailers, for local availability visit www.motorolarugged.com. Priced from $99 for the device only. A bundle including 12 months subscription to the Essentials Messaging service plan (up to 30 two-way messages per month and SOS Assist) will start at $149.

The new motorola defy range will be available for the first hands-on demonstrations at Showstoppers at MWC23, Sunday, 26 February, 4-7pm, Maritime Museum and at the Bullitt stand, Hall 7, Stand B50.

The devices are also on display on the Lenovo stand in Hall 3, Stand 3N30 and MediaTek in Hall 3, Stand 3D10.

Motorola expands its indigenous languages digital inclusion initiative with two new endangered languages spoken in India

Today, in partnership with the Lenovo Foundation, Motorola is excited to announce the next phase of our indigenous languages digital inclusion initiative with the addition of two new languages – Kuvi and Kangri – spoken in regions of India. Over the last two years, we’ve added the support of three endangered indigenous languages to our devices – Cherokee (spoken in the United States), Kaingang (spoken in Brazil) and Nheengatu (spoken in the Amazon). We’re incredibly thrilled to continue our commitment to embracing inclusivity and delivering smarter technology for all, by delivering the first-ever Kuvi language writing system and keyboard, and a fully localized Kangri smartphone User Interface to our devices.*

Of the 2,464 endangered languages around the world listed in the UNESCO Atlas of World’s Languages in Danger, India tops the list with 197 endangered languages, followed by the U.S. (191) and Brazil (190). When selecting the languages for this most recent phase of our project, we analyzed many factors including the percentage of speakers in the communities to indicate loss of language, community access to technologies, engagement with the broader community, and availability of linguistics resources. We found that while the Kuvi language community accounts for about 155,000 people, who live primarily in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, India, only about 9% of the people in the region still speak the language. Similarly, we discovered that while Kangri is spoken by around 1 million people in India, only a very small fraction are fluent speakers.

The first-ever Kuvi language writing system

With this project, Motorola and the Lenovo Foundation worked closely with the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) under the guidance of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS and leadership of Dr. Sushree Sangita Mohanty and support from the Kuvi speakers & language experts to determine the needs of the Kuvi communities in all regions where Kuvi is spoken. Together we determined that the most important step in Kuvi Language Preservation would be to develop the first-ever Kuvi language writing system. Additionally, to facilitate the usage of this new written system, we created a Kuvi keyboard supporting 4 scripts – Kuvi Odia, Kuvi Telugu, Kuvi Devanagari and Kuvi Latin. The new keyboard is available for download via the Google Play Store to help with the utilization of the written form in smartphones and allow for other forms of digitization.

“We at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) are delighted to partner with Motorola and Lenovo Foundation in this one-of-its-kind project to revitalize the endangered status of Kuvi language,” said Samanta. “KISS with support from the Lenovo Foundation has been integral in bringing together the member of tribal communities (Kondh, Kond and Jatapu), linguistic & technical experts, and various other fraternities to collaborate with the Motorola Software Globalization team and develop a keyboard for the Kuvi Language. This initiative sets the path for the revival of many more such languages, helping to preserve the rich legacy, knowledge and heritage that rests in the depths of our country.”

The first fully localized Kangri Smartphone User Interface

We also worked alongside linguists, scholars, and experts from the Kangra, Hamirpur and Una districts of Himachal Pradesh, to deliver the first fully localized Kangri. Smartphone User Interface, in both AOSP content and Motorola Experience apps. To make for a seamless Kangri experience on our devices, we also added Unicode Common Locale Data Repository (CLDR) support with a richer Kangri language data and user interface, all locale-specific patterns for formatting and parsing such as dates, times, currency, measure units, country & language information. Localizing over 200,000 English words into Kangri on our devices means that from the moment a Kangri user sets up their device, they can select the language and navigate a richer UI for both Android AOSP and Motorola experiences.

“With just about 1.7 million speakers of Kangri from a total 1.4 billion people who make India, Motorola and Lenovo Foundation’s language revitalization effort is truly a testimony of their commitment to preserving endangered languages,” said Professor Sunhu Sharma, consultant to Motorola’s Endangered Indigenous Language Initiative for Kangri. “The project was humongous and extremely gratifying, as researchers, tribals, linguists, and tech professionals, worked together to localize over 200,000 English words into Kangri on Motorola’s devices, which will enable Kangri speakers to set up their device in their language and navigate their phone in their mother tongue.”

To further our efforts in bringing more awareness and action to revitalize endangered indigenous languages, this past December, Sergio Buniac, President of Motorola, announced at UNESCO’s  International Decade of Indigenous Languages event, that we are also partnering with UNESCO to conduct further research on the impact and potential of digitizing endangered indigenous languages. “Lenovo and Motorola, in collaboration with UNESCO New Delhi Office, are in the planning phase to develop a toolkit sharing experiences and technology in digitizing endangered indigenous languages,” said Hesekiel Dlamini, Officer in Charge, UNESCO, New Delhi. “This is in line with our shared vision for digital inclusion of indigenous communities.”

In addition to these languages, we also recently introduced a new logo dedicated to our indigenous languages digitization initiative. The new logo is meant to make support of these languages more recognizable on our devices and raise awareness towards the cause.

“With each phase of our endangered indigenous languages project, our goal is to help bridge the gap in digitally inclusive technology and inspire more actions towards the revitalization of these languages”, said Janine Oliveira, Executive Director of Globalization Software at Motorola Mobility. “The addition of Kangri and Kuvi to our growing list of supported languages is a milestone we’re excited to celebrate, but our work doesn’t stop here.”

Moving forward, we will continue to conduct research alongside indigenous communities and engage with regional teams to enrich Motorola experiences and the lives of our incredible consumers.

Motorola launches new Moto Secure App to give consumers more peace of mind

We know data privacy matters to our consumers. That’s why we have ThinkShield, an extra layer of security that enhances protection at every level from the factory to the phone. With comprehensive hardware and software security features that meet the highest standards, you know the data on our smartphones is better protected from malware, phishing, and other threats. To help our consumers take full advantage of all the security features we have to offer, we’re excited to introduce today the new Moto Secure App.

Powered by Thinkshield, the Moto Secure App is your go-to destination for all the vital device security and privacy features on your phone. Within the app, you can quickly check and control the protection of your device with easy access to all related Android and Motorola apps and settings.

In addition to quick access to privacy controls and security features, the Moto Secure App comes with a number of new protections designed to give you peace of mind:

  • Add an extra layer of protection to sensitive information and apps by hiding select apps and files in Secure Folder, protected by a specific PIN. With Secure Folder, you also have the option to enable Disguised Mode allowing you to select from four icons and name options, rather than visibly displaying apps within a folder, for even more privacy. This is especially helpful for disguising more sensitive information like financial apps, digital wallets, shopping apps, or email accounts behind a discrete icon and label.
  • Whether you’re on the go or working from a public location, minimize risks when connecting to public Wi-Fi and cellular networks with the Network Protection feature. By enabling Network Protection you will automatically be notified when a hotspot or Wi-Fi-related security issue is detected. Within network protection, you can also stop specific apps from using open connections and prevent spoofing by blocking 2G connections.

  • Lock Screen Security allows you to see and control all of your lock screen options to configure the protection you need. This includes the ability to lock network and security functions. For example, previously, a thief could simply turn off your mobile network or Wi-Fi, preventing you from locating your lost device. Now, by enabling this feature, you can stay in control and eliminate the ability for someone to turn off your mobile network or Wi-Fi on your device without unlocking the phone.

  • PIN Pad Scramble shuffles the numerical layout of your entry screen, so you can unlock your device without the risk of prying eyes memorizing the pattern of the numbers you press.

  • The Privacy Dashboard gives you a clear and comprehensive view of which apps have accessed your calendar, contacts, files, camera, microphone and location during the past 24 hours. If you see anything that you’re not comfortable with, you can manage app permissions, update security settings, and change privacy controls right from the Moto Secure App.

The new Moto Secure App is currently available on the Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola, moto g 73 5G and moto g 53 5G. Going forward the app will be available on Motorola devices supporting Android 13 or greater.

Meet the new Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola for unmatched business device experience

The ThinkPhone arrives with powerful specs and seamless integration with ThinkPad devices

Meet the Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola, which is engineered to bring businesses a smartphone experience with the same trusted quality and reliability present on every Lenovo Think-branded device. For years, ThinkPad has been about solving customer problems through innovative technology, trusted quality and purposeful design; and today, to celebrate this heritage as Lenovo marks the 30th anniversary of ThinkPad, Motorola is delighted to bring the ThinkPhone, the best companion to a ThinkPad.

ThinkPhone is a unique combination of Motorola’s leading mobile innovation and Lenovo’s long standing vocation in serving businesses to bring customers security solutions. This device arrives with a powerful set of premium specs combined with unique design and integrates seamlessly with a ThinkPad, such as the latest ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 that also embeds several security enhancements.

With ThinkPhone, customers will have a complete suite of security and support features that deliver seamless protection and full manageability backed by ThinkShield. ThinkShield is a superior security platform – which has underlying fundamental security policies, features, specialized hardware, software and processes that ensure the security of the entire device.

IT organizations can be confident that their company’s devices are protected with built-in advanced hardware-based and premium A.I. based security solutions such as Moto Threat Defense. In addition, organizations can easily deploy ThinkPhones to end users with Zero Touch and manage their entire fleet of ThinkPhones with device management solutions like Moto OEMConfig and Moto Device Manager.

This new phone also comes with Moto Secure, an app that serves as a hub for items related to security and privacy. Combined with Moto OEMConfig or Moto Device Manager, IT administrators can remotely configure Moto Secure features on ThinkPhones, from lock screen settings to network alerts to pin layout scrambling. Additionally, the ThinkPhone arrives with Moto KeySafe, a separate processor running on Android, that adds an additional layer of security to better protect the most sensitive data in the smartphone. It isolates PINs, passwords, and cryptographic keys, storing them in a tamper-resistant environment protecting the data from the inside out.

Aside from these security features, this device is MIL STD 810H certified,1 designed with a lightweight aramid fiber that’s stronger than steel, an aircraft-grade aluminum frame and Gorilla® Glass Victus™, so it easily endures shocks and drops from up to 1.25 meters. And with IP68 certification2, the ThinkPhone is designed to withstand dust and water immersion with a depth of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes – so no time or business opportunities are lost due to unnecessary system downtime. All of this in a premium, yet resistant and durable design. The ThinkPhone also has the iconic, customizable Red Key, beautifully crafted on the side to provide immediate access to the most critical business and field apps or instantly integrate the mobile and PC experiences.

Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola introduces Think 2 Think connectivity powered by Ready For3, a set of productivity experiences that allows business end users to enjoy seamless device integration between ThinkPhone and a ThinkPad. The Think 2 Think experiences include:

– Instant Connect: Phone and PC seamlessly discover when nearby and connect over WiFi.

 – Unified Clipboard: Seamlessly transfer copied text or recent photos, scanned documents and videos between devices by pasting into any app on the destination device.

 – Unified Notifications: Phone notifications instantly appear on the Windows Action Center. Clicking a notification auto-launches the corresponding phone app on the PC’s screen.

 – File Drop: Easily drag and drop files between ThinkPhone and PC.

– App Streaming: Open any Android application directly on a PC.

Advanced Webcam: Take advantage of the powerful ThinkPhone cameras and AI capabilities, seamlessly using it as your webcam for all your video calls.

 – Instant Hotspot: Connect to the internet through one click, directly from the PC to leverage the ThinkPhone’s 5G connectivity.4

“I’m excited to launch the Lenovo ThinkPhone, a device that truly embodies the trusted quality and purposeful design of the ThinkPad while also bringing unique productivity tools, and industry-leading security and device management capabilities.”, says Sergio Buniac, Motorola President and Lenovo Senior Vice-President. “With its premium specs and seamless integration with the ThinkPad, the ThinkPhone will maximize the experience for business customers for years to come.”

Everything on the ThinkPhone was engineered with productivity in mind, Motorola has worked with partners, like Microsoft, to bring the best productivity experiences to Motorola’s commercial customers and help ThinkPhone users get things done with ease. At launch, the ThinkPhone will come with Microsoft 365, Outlook, and Teams mobile apps preloaded. Preloading will make it easier to get started – find the content and tools needed, edit or create new documents, or use mobile-friendly features that enable customers to scan a PDF with the camera or dictate a document with their voice.

Motorola and Microsoft are also working together to unleash additional experiences including adding push-to-talk capabilities through the ThinkPhone’s iconic red key, allowing users to have instant communication on the Walkie Talkie app through Microsoft Teams. Both companies are working together to make it easier for employees to be more productive from anywhere by streaming Windows desktops directly to ThinkPhone devices. Employees will be able to use their ThinkPhone to more securely access their personalized Windows apps, content, and settings, to get more done, wherever they’re working.

To ensure the user’s workflow stays at peak performance for years to come, this smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform. With this platform everything opens instantly and even the heaviest workflows run smoothly. Plus, ThinkPhone is equipped with 5G technology and Wi-Fi 6E compatibility, unleashing the power of the new 6GHz Wi-Fi standard that provides the fastest internet speeds available today.

ThinkPhone arrives with a large 6.6” FHD+ display that amplifies the view of all your content, from complex dashboards to endless email threads. And with a large battery, customers will receive over 36 hours of battery life5 to stay connected no matter how far away they travel. When it’s time to recharge, the ThinkPhone comes with a 68W TurboPower universal charger that gives our customers power for the day in just minutes of charging. This lightweight, pocketable charger is so powerful that it is also capable of powering the laptop or any USB-C device.

To complete this powerful device, Motorola included a 50MP Ultra Pixel camera that delivers premium image quality on every video call no matter the lighting conditions. This flagship Ultra Pixel camera is ideal for bringing to life even the tiniest details by capturing photos with 32x more focusing pixels, more accurate images of projects, notes, and sketches—all with incredible clarity and detail.

Motorola and Lenovo Foundation announce next phase of endangered indigenous languages revitalization initiative at UNESCO HQ

For the Cherokee, Kaingang and Nheengatu versions of this press release, please visit our Brand News press box folder

This year, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2022 – 2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL) in an effort to draw global attention to the critical situation of many indigenous languages and to mobilize stakeholders and resources for their preservation, revitalization and promotion. As a global company focused on delivering smarter technology for all, Motorola has raised awareness and taken action towards our continued commitment to the indigenous languages revitalization project, first introduced in early 2021.

Today, as part of UNESCO High-level Celebration of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, Motorola announced the next phase of the project focused on native languages from India, which will arrive in the coming months. Together with the Lenovo Foundation, we are also proud to be partnering with UNESCO to conduct further research on the impact and potential of digitizing endangered indigenous languages.

Motorola President and Lenovo Vice President Sergio Buniac, along with Lenovo Foundation and Motorola Globalization representatives were part of the Paris event that brought together high level representatives of UNESCO Member States, Indigenous leaders, the UN system, civil society national research organizations and representatives from the public and private sectors. These stakeholders were convened in Paris to discuss how to integrate and preserve indigenous languages around the world and how they could cooperate towards a more inclusive future.

“The idea for this project came from a problem identified by our Motorola Globalization Team, which noticed that the indigenous languages had no representation in digitized form in technology that could aid in the preservation of not only the language but also the traditions, culture and history,” says Sergio Buniac, Motorola Global President. We hope that this initiative raises awareness towards language revitalization, not only by impacting the communities, but paving the way for more endangered indigenous languages to be added to other smartphones.

As new generations of indigenous people increase their literacy and use of technology, it is crucial that they be able to use their native language in new, digital formats to avoid the endangerment and loss of language. UNESCO estimates that we lose one indigenous language every two weeks, resulting in around 3,000 unique languages being lost by the end of the century. To help preserve our human heritage, the unique histories of indigenous cultures and empower the next generation, Motorola has been working in partnership with Lenovo Foundation to integrate languages into its smartphones. Kaingang (spoken in Southern Brazil), Nheengatu (spoken in the Amazon), and Cherokee (spoken in the United States) are already part of the more than 80 languages Motorola offers in its mobile interface.

With this initiative, Motorola became the first mobile phone manufacturer to provide Cherokee citizens access to a fully localized mobile phone user interface and to fully support an indigenous language spoken in the Amazon. Motorola has shared the characters, 360,000 translated words, and linguistic customizations on the Android platform so that other OEMs and companies can add the languages to their interfaces, paving the way for broader use and revitalization. As a start, Motorola’s parent company Lenovo is exploring integration of the languages on its PCs.

As the project continues over the next decade, Motorola and Lenovo Foundation hope to increase awareness, bring action toward the survival of endangered languages, and empower future generations of indigenous communities to use technology in their native language.

A Look Back at a Successful Year

A note from Sergio Buniac:

It´s an exciting time at Motorola, a Lenovo Company. With successful product launches, 5G milestones, and strong financial performance, the last fiscal year demonstrates an important turning point for the brand and how we´ve stabilized the business.

On May 23, we reported that Motorola achieved profitability for the year with three consecutive quarters of operational profitability. The past quarter saw strong performance across the globe, with shipment growth up 41 percent year-to-year in Europe, and Latin America seeing record shipments and 19 percent market share. In North America, year-over-year, Motorola was the fastest growing Android OEM by pure volume for 2018. We also saw this impressive growth globally, with Motorola ranking as the third fastest growing OEM for the quarter. We´re carrying this momentum into this year, with big announcements planned for the coming months.

Before we look ahead to the future, I want to take a moment to highlight a few of Motorola´s most exciting moments over the last year.

first to 5G
As the world moves to the fifth generation of mobile connectivity, I am very proud of the role Motorola is playing in bringing this new technology into the hands of consumers. Thanks to key partnerships with Verizon and Qualcomm, we were able to announce the moto z3 and 5G moto modTM in August 2018, as the world´s first 5G-upgradable smartphone. This past April brought another 5G milestone, as the moto z3 with 5G moto modTM became the world´s first smartphone to connect to the unprecedented speed of Verizon´s Ultra Wideband 5G network. By leveraging our moto mod platform, the 5G moto modTM connects consumers to Verizon´s 5G network without having to buy a new smartphone, making 5G connectivity more affordable and accessible.

the new motorola one family
This past year also saw the introduction of a new Motorola smartphone family: motorola one. Launched in September 2018, the motorola one family offers consumers a different choice from our other smartphone lines. With stylish design and innovation, the motorola one and motorola one power have proved popular with consumers across the globe. So popular, we have already added a new smartphone to the motorola one family. In May, we kicked off the new fiscal year with the launch of motorola one vision, which features a stunning CinemaVision display and incredible 48MP sensor camera system. The newest member of the motorola one family is off to a great start, and we are excited to watch the device roll out across the world in the coming months.

seven generations of success with moto g
In 2013, Motorola made history with the launch of moto g as the first mid-range smartphone, offering premium features at an amazing price point. Today, the moto g is our most successful smartphone line with 26 devices sold per minute, since its launch six years ago. And, in the beginning of 2019, we continued the successful legacy of moto g with the launch of four new smartphones. Now, in the seventh generation, moto g remains the go-to smartphone for consumers looking for premium features, quality construction, and dependable performance, all at a great value.

We accomplished a lot last year thanks in no small part to our trusted carrier and supplier partners and all of our customers. Motorola is carrying this momentum into the current year, and we´re already on track to surpass the growth we saw this year. I can´t wait for you to see everything Motorola has in the works. The future looks bright.
