Motorola makes history again as the first to connect to 5G

At Motorola, innovation is a part of our DNA. Motorola created the mobile communications industry as we know it, inventing most of the protocols and technologies that make it all possible, including the first mobile phone and the base station – and most everything in between. We made it again. With that pioneering spirit still burning brightly today, Motorola makes history as the first manufacturer to connect mobile consumers to 5G.1

On April 3, 2019, the moto z3 combined with the 5G moto modTM became the world’s first commercially-available smartphone to connect to 5G when Verizon turned on its 5G Ultra Wideband network. Forty-six years to the day, after the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was used to make the world’s first mobile phone call, consumers were able to access the first commercial 5G network using the moto z3 and 5G moto modTM. Just like the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X revolutionized mobile communication in 1973, 5G will transform mobile technology as we know it.

Delivering lower latency, higher bandwidth, and speeds up to 10 times faster than existing wireless technology2, 5G networks will strengthen mobile connectivity and radically improve the smartphone experience. By simply snapping on the 5G moto modTM, users can connect their moto z3 to Verizon’s 5G network and enjoy a faster and smoother smartphone experience. Powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X50 5G modem and packed with QTM052 mmWave antenna modules, the 5G moto mod™ leverages Motorola’s moto mod platform to connect moto z3 users to 5G without having to buy a new smartphone. Uninterrupted 4K live streaming, video chatting, lag-free gaming and VR experiences, and the fastest download speeds ever are just the start of what you can do with the moto z3 and 5G moto modTM, together with Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network.2 Connect the moto z3 and 5G moto modTM to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network and the possibilities are endless.
