4 Things to know about Motorola’s 312 Labs

Back in 2021, Motorola announced the creation of our Motorola 312 Labs innovation group, a team dedicated to exploring the unknown to usher in radically different mobile solutions and technologies in both the near and distant future. While this team works closely with our product development team, their role and focus is different. So to help explain what they do, here are 4 fast facts about Motorola 312 Labs:

Motorola 312 Labs isn’t an actual lab

Motorola 312 Labs is not a single physical lab, but rather one of our global internal teams whose focus is on innovating for the future. Comprising global research, design and engineering experts focused on first-of-its-kind product development, Motorola 312 Labs’ mission is to solve consumer pain points by exploring the unknown and turning conceptual ideas into a reality.

The team is comprised of experts from across the globe, not just Chicago

Motorola’s innovation has deep roots in Chicago, IL, being headquartered in the city since its founding. And while the name “312” was chosen as it’s one of Chicago’s most well-known telephone area codes, the Motorola 312 Labs team is actually comprised of employees based across the globe including the United States, Brazil, China, and India. In alignment with the values instilled by Lenovo’s Product Diversity Office, when building the group, leaders recognized the importance of bringing in team members from all backgrounds, disciplines and geographies to ensure diversity in the ideas and outputs from the organization.

Despite only just announcing the group in 2021, Motorola has brought incredible innovation to the market for years such as shatterproof screens, moto mods and the foldable razr. And many of the experts responsible for these innovations play a critical role in the work Motorola 312 Labs does today. In fact, some even played a part in defining the original RAZR.

Form factors, advanced displays, AR & VR, and more. Motorola 312 Labs explores it all

The best thing about Motorola 312 Labs is that since it lives outside of Motorola’s existing product development pipeline, the team is free to explore and imagine any new kind of mobile technology – even technologies that don’t exist yet. Today, the team is focused on a few key research areas including the connected ecosystem of the future, metaverse evolution, exploring new and unique mobile form factors and wearables, advancing displays, and AR & VR technologies. They also work closely with teams all across Lenovo to ensure we’re leveraging as much expertise and collaboration as possible when researching, developing, and executing these unique innovations.

Since its official creation, the group has introduced two unique form factors to the world: the 5G XR neckband and rollable smartphone concept

Of the many emerging technology spaces Motorola 312 Labs explores, one, in particular, is reimagining device form factors to solve customer pain points and enable new experiences.

In 2022, we introduced in partnership with Lenovo and Verizon, a hands-free, 5G XR neckband built for delivering high bandwidth, ultra-low latency connectivity and power to AR glasses and VR goggles. The device redefines the role of the smartphone by allowing users to display content to more immersive screens around them, in turn offering better portability, longer-lasting and a higher quality user experience in more places.

But the team didn’t stop there. Last year, also marked a pivotal milestone for Motorola and the group as we introduced a new Rollable smartphone proof of concept. This concept builds upon the display and mechanical innovations we delivered in our foldable devices, and projects where the exciting space of dynamic form factors can go. When retracted, the Rollable concept’s super pocketable form is smaller than most other premium devices on the market. The expanded state provides a 6.5” screen for immersive gaming, content streaming, and productivity, while the retracted size is perfect for enjoying the full Android experience on-the-go. The concept device provides endless opportunities for content creation and entertainment while offering the newfound flexibility of a small device with a wraparound screen.

As a Lenovo company, the Motorola 312 Labs team works closely with our peers across the company to integrate the work we do into other facets of the Lenovo business, like PCs. Employing similar rollable technology to elevate multi-tasking and browsing capabilities while retaining a compact size, Lenovo also debuted the Rollable laptop PC concept late last year.

The Motorola 312 Labs team is always working on more projects and concepts that push the boundaries of what’s possible, stay tuned for more innovations of the future.

Motorola introduces rollable smartphone concept at Lenovo Tech World 22

Motorola has been a pioneer in the mobile industry for over 90 years and has consistently been at the forefront of innovation from foldable to 5G. Today this trend continued at Lenovo Tech World ‘22, where Motorola described the future of innovative form factors and introduced a new Rollable smartphone concept.

This new Rollable concept comes from the team at 312 Labs, Motorola’s internal innovation group of product, research, design and engineering experts from across the globe. 312 Labs explores several emerging technology spaces, and one in particular is reimagining device form factors to solve customer pain points and enable new experiences. This new concept builds upon the display and mechanical innovations we delivered in our foldable devices, and projects where the exciting space of dynamic form factors can go.

the vision behind rollable
At Motorola, we see the smartphone as an extension of ourselves – a tool that allows us to adapt to our surroundings and accomplish tasks with ease. Now, we are investing in flexible OLED, or pOLED, screens to deliver an optimal balance of content and comfort. The Rollable concept embodies this idea with a screen that adjusts to three distinct states: extended, compact and peek, with a simple press of a button.

At just over 4 inches tall, the Rollable concept retracts to a super pocketable form smaller than most other premium devices on the market. Whether it be a 6.5” screen for immersive gaming or a retracted size for on-the-go convenience, this concept provides endless opportunities for content creation and entertainment while offering newfound flexibility of a small device with wraparound screen.

In addition to the Rollable smartphone concept, Lenovo debuted a Rollable laptop PC concept that employs similar technology to elevate multi-tasking and browsing capabilities while retaining a compact size. More details on the Rollable laptop PC concept can be found on Lenovo StoryHub.

While Rollable is currently in the conceptual stage, you can follow along on the latest innovations and updates on the Motorola website or follow along on Twitter.

Motorola and Verizon collaborate to deliver next generation of wearable technology

Motorola and Lenovo continue to focus on a cohesive strategy of delivering innovative technology solutions. Together, we have already brought some incredible innovations to market, most recently our enterprise AR solutions with Motorola smartphones powering ThinkReality A3 smart glasses. Today, we’re excited to take this a step further with Verizon on wearable innovation with a hands-free, 5G XR neckband built for delivering high bandwidth, ultra-low latency connectivity and power to AR glasses and VR goggles. This will enable lightweight, boundless, immersive, and above all scalable AR / VR experiences.

When we announced our Motorola 312 Labs R&D group last year, our goal was to continue to challenge what the mobile experience feels, looks and acts like. Now, together with Verizon and Lenovo, we have created a 5G wearable neckband that redefines the role of the smartphone by allowing users to display content to more immersive screens around them. This means better portability, longer-lasting and a higher quality user experience in more places.

“Motorola 312 Labs is focused on exploring new and developing opportunities in mobile technology, including innovative wearables and form factors,” said Jeff Snow, Product General Manager at Motorola. “With this collaboration, we’re further strengthening our partnership with Verizon to solve new challenges in the industry and advance consumer and enterprise AR use cases.”

The plug&play wearable device optimized for these use cases leverages the speed, bandwidth, and low latency of Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network and mobile edge compute platform to deliver high fidelity immersive experiences that last longer and are ready “out of the box”. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform, our 5G neckband is designed to prove next-generation mobile computing applications, by advancing enterprise AR/VR solutions to be untethered, hands-free and boundless experiences.

“Motorola’s wearable neckband and ultra-lightweight AR smart glasses leverage Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network and mobile edge compute platform, enabling us to deliver immersive technology in many fields, such as sports training and fan experiences, as well as making VR theaters scalable,” said Brian Mecum, Vice President of Device Technology at Verizon.

Solutions like our wearable form factor will benefit more than just the tech industry alone – they will enhance the full spectrum of work and play activities. By joining forces, we’re excited to be at the forefront of game-changing technologies like 5G, edge compute and AR and VR, that are going to bring unprecedented value to consumer and enterprise spaces. Verizon and Motorola are working on exciting AR and VR applications, and we look forward to sharing more of these developments in the coming months.

Today, Motorola introduces Motorola 312 Labs, a newly chartered internal innovation group within the Motorola product organization, comprising global research, design and engineering experts focused on first-of-its-kind product development. This group will explore the unknown through research, ideation, concepting, and prototyping to usher in radically different mobile solutions and technologies in both the near and distant future. The introduction of the Motorola 312 Labs R&D group at Motorola, a Lenovo company, further supports Lenovo’s mission to double investment in R&D over the next three years.

Motorola’s business has seen impressive growth and profitability, recording its best quarter ever, with profit reaching a new historic high of US$89 million, while revenue grew 27% year-on-year to the highest in 15 quarters. This is thanks to a core portfolio of products like motorola razr, motorola edge and moto g, and services like ThinkShield for mobile and Moto Talk.

Motorola has brought incredible innovation to market such as shatterproof screens, moto mods and the foldable razr, and Motorola 312 Labs will continue to accelerate new technologies to market and assist the wider Lenovo Group. Looking ahead, Motorola 312 Labs is focused on a few key research areas including the connected ecosystem of the future, metaverse evolution, exploring new and unique mobile form factors and wearables, advancing displays, and AR & VR technologies.

“Motorola 312 Labs is uniquely positioned as its mission is to explore the unknown but with a research team that has the expertise to turn a conceptual idea into a reality.” Said Dan Dery, Motorola Vice President of Product. “One of our expertise is understanding the needs of customers, because what’s the point of breakthrough if it doesn’t mean anything to people? That’s a key focus area for Motorola 312 Labs as it looks to the future of mobile technology.”
