Motorola launches new Moto Secure App to give consumers more peace of mind

We know data privacy matters to our consumers. That’s why we have ThinkShield, an extra layer of security that enhances protection at every level from the factory to the phone. With comprehensive hardware and software security features that meet the highest standards, you know the data on our smartphones is better protected from malware, phishing, and other threats. To help our consumers take full advantage of all the security features we have to offer, we’re excited to introduce today the new Moto Secure App.

Powered by Thinkshield, the Moto Secure App is your go-to destination for all the vital device security and privacy features on your phone. Within the app, you can quickly check and control the protection of your device with easy access to all related Android and Motorola apps and settings.

In addition to quick access to privacy controls and security features, the Moto Secure App comes with a number of new protections designed to give you peace of mind:

  • Add an extra layer of protection to sensitive information and apps by hiding select apps and files in Secure Folder, protected by a specific PIN. With Secure Folder, you also have the option to enable Disguised Mode allowing you to select from four icons and name options, rather than visibly displaying apps within a folder, for even more privacy. This is especially helpful for disguising more sensitive information like financial apps, digital wallets, shopping apps, or email accounts behind a discrete icon and label.
  • Whether you’re on the go or working from a public location, minimize risks when connecting to public Wi-Fi and cellular networks with the Network Protection feature. By enabling Network Protection you will automatically be notified when a hotspot or Wi-Fi-related security issue is detected. Within network protection, you can also stop specific apps from using open connections and prevent spoofing by blocking 2G connections.

  • Lock Screen Security allows you to see and control all of your lock screen options to configure the protection you need. This includes the ability to lock network and security functions. For example, previously, a thief could simply turn off your mobile network or Wi-Fi, preventing you from locating your lost device. Now, by enabling this feature, you can stay in control and eliminate the ability for someone to turn off your mobile network or Wi-Fi on your device without unlocking the phone.

  • PIN Pad Scramble shuffles the numerical layout of your entry screen, so you can unlock your device without the risk of prying eyes memorizing the pattern of the numbers you press.

  • The Privacy Dashboard gives you a clear and comprehensive view of which apps have accessed your calendar, contacts, files, camera, microphone and location during the past 24 hours. If you see anything that you’re not comfortable with, you can manage app permissions, update security settings, and change privacy controls right from the Moto Secure App.

The new Moto Secure App is currently available on the Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola, moto g 73 5G and moto g 53 5G. Going forward the app will be available on Motorola devices supporting Android 13 or greater.

Motorola’s indigenous languages revitalization initiative named Honorable Mention in Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards

Today, we’re excited to announce that Motorola has been named an honoree of Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards for our indigenous languages revitalization initiative. This year, the awards honored a number of companies and their solutions which support clean technology, innovative corporate initiatives, brave new designs for cities and buildings, and other creative works that are supporting the growth of positive social innovation, tackling social inequality, climate change, and public health crises.

In 2021, Motorola introduced our indigenous languages revitalization initiative – an effort focused on embracing digital inclusion by fully supporting two indigenous languages spoken in the Amazon and South of Brazil. With many of these indigenous languages in danger of disappearing completely, Motorola became the first OEM to digitize Kaingang and Nheengatu on a smartphone device.

“We’re honored to have been recognized by Fast Company for our work in bringing more digital inclusion to our consumers and industry,” said Renata Altenfleder, Head of Global Brand at Motorola. “With this initiative, we are working toward delivering a mobile experience that embraces all of our users and contributes to the survival of indigenous languages and cultures.”

Now in its sixth year, the World Changing Ideas Awards showcase 39 winners, 350 finalists, and more than 600 honorable mentions—with climate, social justice, and AI and data among the most popular categories. A panel of eminent Fast Company editors and reporters selected winners and finalists from a pool of more than 2,997 entries across transportation, education, food, politics, technology, health, social justice, and more. In addition, several new categories have been added this year including climate, nature, water, and workplace. The 2022 awards feature entries from across the globe, from Switzerland to Hong Kong to Australia.

Motorola along with other fellow winners of the prestigious World Changing Ideas awards will be showcased in Fast Company’s Summer 2022 issue, hitting newsstands on May 10, 2022.

“We are consistently inspired by the novelty and creativity that people are applying to solve some of our society’s most pressing problems, from shelter to the climate crisis. Fast Company relishes its role in amplifying important, innovative work to address big challenges,” says David Lidsky, interim editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “Our journalists have identified some of the most ingenious initiatives to launch since the start of 2021, which we hope will both have a meaningful impact and lead others to join in being part of the solution.”

In 2022, Motorola announced the completion of the second phase of this initiative with the support of the Cherokee language on Motorola devices’ User Interface.

“With our efforts to open-source our software indigenous language assets, we hope this initiative and milestone will inspire more actions toward revitalization within our industry, and we are eager to continue this work in the years to come”, said Janine Oliveira, Executive Director Globalization, Motorola.”

About the World Changing Ideas Awards
World Changing Ideas is one of Fast Company’s major annual awards programs and is focused on social good, seeking to elevate finished products and brave concepts that make the world better. A panel of judges from across sectors choose winners, finalists, and honorable mentions based on feasibility and the potential for impact. With the goals of awarding ingenuity and fostering innovation, Fast Company draws attention to ideas with great potential and helps them expand their reach to inspire more people to start working on solving the problems that affect us all.

Motorola upgrades ThinkShield® for mobile, for superior mobile device management

The need to secure our devices and protect sensitive data has increased over the years. Now, more than ever we need solutions to help guard against online and identity-based threats. At Motorola, we are committed to helping companies secure their devices and protect sensitive data. That’s why Motorola has ThinkShield for mobile, an enterprise platform designed to deliver premium business-grade security, manageability, productivity and service features on our smartphones.

Last year, Motorola released the moto OEMConfig app, part of the ThinkShield for mobile portfolio, a superior mobile device management plug-in that provides business customers with advanced features on our devices. Since the release, Motorola has upgraded the app to include a number of new features that improve customers’ experience and increase security. These upgrades include:

Firewall blocklist: With this update admins experience extra firewall security and can now block a user from accessing specific websites and web addresses. Simply set the firewall and URL connection restrictions to block unwanted media sites from an app or browser. This is a perfect feature for small and medium sized businesses who aren’t looking to buy a full VPN solution.

Remote control: Having someone help with IT issues at a kiosk or vending machine is a thing of the past. Now you can grant access and manage which apps can use remote control capabilities even if the device is unattended by a user.

SIM card PIN lock: Add an extra layer of security and help keep your data safe by adding in a PIN lock to your sim card. With this feature, admins can prevent the sim card from being used with other devices or make sure that company provided sim cards are only used with company devices.

Set wallpaper and device language:To create a more personalized experience, businesses can now set the language of their device and can add a brand to any Motorola device and set their logo as the wallpaper, identifying and personalizing your device was never this easy.

Ready For controls: Experience more control with Ready For. With this update, customers can control access to the camera and block file transfers. You can also make sure your documents are protected from bystanders looking at your screen if you walk away.

The Thinkshield for mobile OEMConfig app is available on the PlayStore and can be easily installed and compatible with Android Enterprise Recommended EMMs (Enterprise Mobility Management). To learn more about Thinkshield for mobile, please visit: motorola.com/thinkshield.

5 ways to optimize the Motorola software experience on Android

At Motorola, we want to bring the best software experiences possible to our end-users. Our close partnership with Android and tight integration with Google apps and services speak to that commitment. Instead of duplicating the great things done with Android™, we choose to build upon it with unique ways of enhancing the mobile experience, from moto e to motorola razr.

Here are 5 ways users can optimize their Motorola software experience on Android:

  1. Switching made simple: Google has made it so simple to move from iOS to Android. By backing up content in Google Drive, Android and iOS users alike can quickly transfer data to a new device. Additionally, Motorola and Google have collaborated to bring a new device setup and migration experience to the moto g all recently launched globally. The new experience is faster and easier to use, and allows Motorola customers to directly migrate their data from their old devices using just a USB cable, avoiding the need for slow cloud backups. The new experience allows migration from both Android and iOS devices, and supports a much broader range of data than before, meaning customers can quickly and confidently switch, knowing their most valuable content will always come with them.
  2. Customizations: Google and Moto software makes it easy to personalize and customize your smartphone experience. From changing wallpapers and creating widgets to customizing notifications the Android software experience is more personal. And with My UX, Motorola allows you to customize the experience to be even more intuitive and personal, so it works just the way you want. Whether it’s turning on the flashlight with a simple chop gesture, launching the camera with the twist of a wrist with Moto Actions, bringing creativity to life with Moto note or changing your icon shapes, color schemes and display font to fit your style – it’s all a part of the Motorola experience. And we’re constantly updating My UX features to ensure our users have the latest and greatest. This is why we recently introduced an Interactive Wallpaper Hub created to provide different ways for our users to make their own wallpaper.*
  3. Voice Assistance: With just your voice, you can ask the Google Assistant for help with anything from calling a friend to opening up your favorite apps. And on select Motorola devices, a dedicated button makes it easy to activate Google Assistant whenever you need.
  4. Video Calling: This year, many of us relied on the Google Duo video calling app to get face-to-face with the people who matter most no matter where we are in the world. And now, with Motorola’s Ready For platform, we’ve taken this a step further so you can feel like you’re in the same room. With Ready For, users have the option to pick between the 64 MP main lens that helps every scene look vivid and clear, or the 16 MP ultra-wide lens that lets you capture more people in one frame for the ultimate group video call.Plus, you can make sure you’re front and center by activating Ready For’s industry first advanced subject tracking¹, which tracks face movement to ensure you’re always front and center when video calling and recording.
  5. Security: Android’s tools and privacy controls put users in charge by providing access to location controls, permissions, and more. With the addition of fingerprint scanners and Face ID, which can be found on a number of Android and Motorola devices, users can have peace of mind that their information and device are better protected. But at Motorola, we wanted to take security a step further with Thinkshield for Mobile. Security is at the core of what we do and with ThinkShield for mobile, we are delivering business-grade security, manageability, productivity and service.

Today, Motorola is excited to announce our newest camera function: Scanner Mode. Already available on our moto g100 devices, Scanner Mode makes it easy for you to digitize documents directly on your smartphone.

To use this resource, just open the camera application and swipe from right to left to access camera modes and choose Scanner mode in the “Photo” section. Motorola becomes first mobile phone manufacturer to fully support indigenous language spoken in the Amazon

As Motorola continues to embrace inclusivity through our Smarter Technology for All concept, we´ve added two endangered indigenous languages to our devices, becoming the first mobile phone manufacturer to support indigenous language spoken in the Amazon. Now, anyone who owns a new Motorola device, or a Motorola device that supports Android 11, will be able to access Kaingang and Nheengatu as part of the 80+ languages we offer through Android.

At Motorola, we know indigenous populations are interacting with mobile technology and are one of many diverse groups that make up our valued consumer base. With the largest part of our users based in Latin America, we noticed that Brazilian and Latin American indigenous languages were not present on Android, nor were they a part of Unicode, which forms the foundation of digital inclusion and representation throughout a variety of digital interfaces.

Unfortunately, many of these indigenous languages are in danger of disappearing completely. Prior to the arrival of the Portuguese to what would then become Brazil, approximately 1,215 languages were spoken in the territory. But as native speakers lose proficiency in traditional languages and children no longer learn them as their mother tongue at home, many of these languages have ceased to exist. 500 years later, only around 200 of them remain, and in less than a century this number could go all the way down to zero.

When a language ceases to exist, the history, culture and identity of those who speak it cease to exist as well, and a world heritage dies. Robert Melo from our Globalization engineering team asked himself, how can we help preserve or even revitalize some of these endangered languages through our software experience? In response, he led a team of engineers to conduct research and development. Juliana Rebelatto managed our Language Services activities and indigenous linguists and scholars, led by Professor Wilmar Angelis from Unicamp University in Brazil, to add Kaingang and Nheengatu to our devices through Android.

We´re thrilled to act as pioneers of digital inclusion, taking an important step toward a mobile experience that embraces all our users and contributes to the survival of indigenous languages and cultures, says Janine Oliveira, Executive Director of Globalization Software at Motorola Mobility. By sharing our innovation with other OEMs and other globalization professionals, we hope to broaden the impact of this project and pave the way for more indigenous languages to be added to Android in the future.

Since the integration of native languages in written form is crucial for their preservation, we´re working closely with Google to make these languages available in AOSP and Google Gboard, and will also work with the Unicode consortium to open source all of the language data we´ve collected with their support.

We will continue to conduct research alongside indigenous communities and engage with regional teams to enrich Motorola experiences and the lives of our incredible consumers.

Motorola announces partnership with Zimperium, enabling mobile threat defense for B2B customers on its ThinkShield for mobile platform

Today, Motorola and Zimperium, one of the global leaders in mobile security, announced a partnership to provide B2B customers with industry-leading mobile threat defense (MTD) through the ThinkShield for mobile platform. Security has always been at the core of what Motorola does, and by adding this Zimperium solution to our portfolio, we are offering world-leading, business-grade security on Motorola devices secured by ThinkShield for mobile.

Zimperium’s solutions will help protect Motorola devices by:

  • using Artificial Intelligence to protect against zero-day threats: provides protection against “unknown” malware by analyzing the device’s behavior;

  • using real-time on-device detection: Zimperium zIPS is always monitoring the device’s behavior; the application runs on-device and is not dependent on servers or a cloud;

  • implementing business-grade forensics: enabling companies to perform post-attack analysis;

  • and leveraging advanced analytics such as malware classifications, privacy/security ratings, and reporting.

“Our goal with the ThinkShield for mobile platform is to continue to protect our B2B customers in this world of ever-increasing mobile threats, more demanding productivity, device management and service needs,” said Sudhir Chadaga, Head of Strategy at Motorola. “Partnering with Zimperium will add a critical layer of security to our platform, providing our customers with peace of mind.”

Our ThinkShield for mobile platform offers solutions that will increase productivity and help protect sensitive data against mobile threats. ThinkShield for mobile follows four fundamental principles: clean OS, secure by design, always-on manageability, end-to-end approach.

“We are excited to add Zimperium’s industry-leading active threat and risk detection to Motorola’s ThinkShield for mobile framework,” said Akhil Bhutani, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Zimperium. “Motorola customers can now enhance protection of critical business initiatives enabled by mobile devices, and lower overall risk exposure.”
