How to set up moto tag: the accessory that finds belongings and takes photos remotely

Finding car keys, a bike, or a suitcase on the other side of the world are just some of the functions of the moto tag, Motorola’s device-finding accessory that works with all compatible Android smartphones¹. Now, it has added a feature to remotely take photos using the accessory.

The moto tag is an accessory that lets users locate their belongings anywhere in the world with the help of Google’s Find My Device network for Android.

Frequently misplaced car or house keys? Want to ensure a bike remains at the doorstep or that a suitcase is on the same flight? Left behind a backpack at a café and need to locate its last known position? Or want to take a group photo without assistance? These are just a few scenarios where the moto tag becomes an invaluable tool.

The moto tag utilizes Google’s Find My Device network¹, comprising over 1 billion Android devices worldwide, to locate lost items. Not only does it help users track tagged items, but it also enhances convenience. For instance, with a simple press of the moto tag button, users can locate their smartphone. Additionally, it functions as a remote control for taking photos from a connected smartphone—no timer needed. The moto tag is also incredibly easy to set up.

How to set up moto tag

Setting up the moto tag is straightforward:

  1. Users first remove the protective film from the back of the accessory. A beep will confirm that the moto tag is powered on.
  2. Next, users enable Bluetooth on their smartphone and bring it close to the moto tag. A pop-up window will confirm that the setup is in progress. Once complete, the moto tag is ready to assist in locating attached items.

If the pop-up window does not appear, users can navigate to Settings > Google Play Services > App Details > Update to resolve the issue.

For additional customization, users can access Google’s Find My Device app, where they can rename the moto tag, adjust volume settings, and more. Users can also share the moto tag’s location with friends and family via the app to help track lost items.

Finding a smartphone with moto tag

Thanks to the dedicated button on the iconic Motorola “M,” the moto tag can also locate a user’s connected smartphone. To enable this feature, users download the Moto Tag app, then navigate to More > Locate Your Phone and activate the option.

Within this screen, users can adjust the ringtone volume, making it easier to locate a misplaced phone—ideal for anyone who tends to leave their device in random spots at home.

Privacy, security, and accuracy

To protect from unwanted tracking, the moto tag supports Android’s unknown tracker alerts. These alerts detect if another Bluetooth tag is traveling with a user, sending a private notification without alerting the tag’s owner.

Users can see where the tag was detected and use the ‘Find Nearby’ feature to locate it discreetly. A manual scan option is also available to check for nearby trackers, ensuring full control and peace of mind.

Google’s Find My Device network was built with user safety as a key priority. Location data crowdsourced from the network is end-to-end encrypted, which ensures Google or anyone else can’t see or use it for any other purposes. Learn more about how Find My Device here.

How moto tag works

The moto tag functions like other trackers but stands out by being compatible with any Android smartphone running version 9 or later. It uses secure Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) technology to connect with Android devices within a range of up to 100 meters.

For smartphones equipped with Ultra-Wideband (UWB)⁴ technology, users can benefit from precise device tracking. A compass feature guides users step by step to the moto tag’s location—even offline.

Battery life and durability

The moto tag is powered by a standard CR2032 battery², which is easy to replace and widely available. Under typical conditions, it offers up to one year of use.

Users can find what matters worry-free because moto tag is IP67 certified, protecting it from dust, dirt, and sand, and it can be submerged in up to 1 meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes³.
