Earth Day 2023: Investing in our planet

Each year, April 22nd marks an important day for our planet – Earth Day – a day dedicated to honoring the achievements of the environmental movement and raising awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations. As a global technology powerhouse operating in markets across the globe, we fully understand the role we have in raising awareness and taking action to help protect our planet. In 2021, we announced a set of long-term KPIs that will help to do so, including achieving a 30% improvement in the energy efficiency of our mobile phones by FY 29/30.

As a Lenovo company, we are actively committed to investing in our planet through a number of key initiatives that will help to improve energy efficiency, increase sustainable packaging and product design, and reduce emissions. In January 2023, Lenovo announced its commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with science-based targets validated through the Science Based Targets initiative’s Net-Zero Standard.

Hello camera: multiple enhancements are available for Motorola’s latest premium devices

Capturing photos and videos, in a quick, effortless way is a must-have for smartphone users. In fact, more than 90% of consumers are using the camera in the automatic mode, which means they simply open the app, point and shoot. Knowing how important it is to capture these notable moments on the fly, Motorola is bringing new camera software updates to its portfolio.

Keeping photographers ahead of the curve, these new updates contribute to the exceptional triple high-res camera system on the motorola edge 40 pro. The main 50MP camera offers OIS, instant all-pixel focus, and large 2.0um ultra pixels that help capture photos that are crystal-clear in any light. The camera system also includes a 50MP ultrawide camera with Macro Vision, 60MP front camera with Quad Pixel technology and a 12MP telephoto portrait camera with 2x optical zoom, so that consumers can take breathtaking content of everything – from stunning landscapes to extreme closeups, and even more flattering shots of people.

The camera features and what they’re all about

From image quality enhancements to new capabilities, Motorola is releasing a combination of video and camera improvements across the entire camera system. Internal data revealed that 70% of videos recorded with Motorola smartphones are less than 60 seconds. So, to help users capture content that is both momentary and memorable, Motorola has introduced a new set of features to take videos to the next level:

– Horizon Lock Stabilization: Photographers can now use the new “Horizon Lock” feature to keep the footage stabilized and automatically locked onto the horizon, even while rotating up to a full 360°. This is great for action scenarios where there would be heavy camera movement like skateboarding, skiing or kayaking.

– Video Auto Focus Tracking: Users can enable this feature to keep their subject crystal-clear and in focus even when it’s in motion throughout the frame. For example, if recording a video of a child running around, and another person enters the scene, the focus will stay locked on the original subject.

– Video Portrait (bokeh): Consumers can take videos like a professional by creating a beautiful soft focus background behind their subject. This AI-based effect is ideal for users who want a singular subject as their focal point.

– Video Night Vision: When shooting videos in low-light environments, consumers can switch to Night Vision mode for video to capture brighter footage with more detail, better clarity, and more accurate color. The AI-based algorithm applies lighting techniques to low-light scenarios, increasing the overall brightness and decreasing noise at the same time.

– Vlog mode: Motorola’s Dual Capture feature has been enhanced even more for videos. Now, when users select the Vlog mode audio icon, the picture-in-picture window only appears when voice is detected from the front side. And when someone isn’t speaking, the window automatically disappears. This allows customers to easily add commentary while recording.

Additionally, consumers can expect brilliant images and videos when using certain social media applications, which now support secondary cameras like ultrawide and telephoto, as well as features like Dual Capture, directly within apps, if applicable.

These new camera features are available in selected motorola edge smartphones, including the new motorola edge+.

Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola arrives with Moto KeySafe for tamper-resistant protection

Over the years we have developed and enhanced our ThinkShield platform to deliver business-grade security, manageability, productivity, and service features for our smartphones. And with Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola we’re continuing our commitment to deliver customers unparalleled security with Moto KeySafe, which provides our smartphones with the latest device security technology. With Moto KeySafe, our devices have a security processor dedicated to running processes more securely and better protecting sensitive data and information.

With this capability we are able to deliver hardware-level security with tamper-resistant protection. As a physically isolated processor, Moto KeySafe helps counter against malicious attacks on the core processor. One way it provides this protection is by having its own separate memory location where highly sensitive digital keys are stored. Additionally the firmware running on this processor is further hardened to withstand attacks. With this level of protection, sensitive processes (e.g. device unlock and file encryption) and data are better protected from advanced attacks (e.g. physical and side-channel attacks).

You can think of Moto KeySafe like having a hidden safe inside your home or office. All Motorola devices with ThinkShield built-in security have superior protection. But with Moto KeySafe, selected devices will have an additional layer to protect against advanced attacks.

Operating environment formally certified with high security level to protect sensitive data

We are able to deliver Moto KeySafe in collaboration with industry partners, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Google. Moto KeySafe’s current implementation is based on the secure processing unit in the Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform and follows Android security requirements for Strongbox Keymaster. With this implementation, Moto KeySafe delivers a certified platform with further enhanced security to our consumers.

Enables digital keys for cars, digital wallet for e-money solutions and others

With Moto KeySafe, sensitive processes use additional layers of advanced authentication. An example of a sensitive process is the device lock using a pin or password and file encryption. For these processes to work, the devices will store digital keys and these keys are checked every time the process is run. Now with Moto KeySafe, these digital keys are stored in a separate place with additional authentication to access them for added security. In the technical world, this is called a keymaster HAL (hardware abstraction layer).

Motorola devices with Moto KeySafe are ready for solutions such as digital car and house keys, digital passports and driver licenses, and advanced payment solutions that require uncompromised levels of security. With Moto KeySafe built-in, developers of these new solutions are able to leverage our dedicated security processor to provide their users with peace of mind that their most valuable assets are being protected on a Motorola device.

Moto KeySafe will be available in select devices, including the motorola edge 30 ultra and Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola .

A call that changed the world: Motorola celebrates the 50-Year Anniversary of the First Commercial Mobile Phone Call

Motorola’s pioneering spirit has proven to be a critical part of progressing the mobile industry to what it is today. From delivering the world’s first commercially available 5G-upgradable smartphone to the first clamshell smartphone, we have a rich heritage in rewriting how people access and experience innovation. But perhaps the most defining moment in mobile tech history came exactly 50 years ago on April 3, 1973, when Martin Cooper, former Motorola VP and Director of R&D, used the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X to make the world’s first commercial mobile phone call from Sixth Avenue in New York City. It marked a pivotal point in time for society as we no longer had to sit by a landline or wait for a page to ensure we didn’t miss a call. It meant we could communicate with anyone, any time, from anywhere.

“When I made the first public portable cell phone call on April 3, 1973, I knew it was only the beginning; that Motorola and the cellphone industry were starting a revolution in personal communications,” said Martin Cooper. “Since then, there have been a huge number of pivotal innovations, many of them created by Motorola. The first fifty years were only the warm-up. There will be many more exciting advancements that will transform humanity”.

50 years later, we’re proud to say Motorola has continued to be at the forefront of a number of other industry-defining technologies, patents, and game-changing innovations that have shaped the world as we know it. We’ve come a long way since the release of the DynaTAC 8000X, which measured more than a foot long and weighed almost 2 pounds at the time. Some examples include the original RAZR V3, a device that came to market in the early 2000s, a time when mobile design had become predictable. Popular for its unique clamshell design and thin appearance, RAZR V3 continues to be a globally iconic piece of technology today.

More recently, on April 3, 2019, the moto z3 combined with the 5G moto modTM became the world’s first commercially-available smartphone to connect to 5G. Since then, we’ve been determined to democratize 5G technology bringing blazing-fast 5G speeds to the mid-tier through our moto g family.

We’ve also been key in pushing the boundaries of alternative form factors. In 2019, we launched the world’s first clamshell smartphone – the motorola razr – which brought consumers portability without sacrificing the functionalities of a full-sized smartphone display. We’ve also introduced innovations like the neckband, a wearable 5G device that redefines the role of the smartphone by allowing you to display content to more immersive screens around you. And most recently, we unveiled a rollable smartphone concept device. Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue to test the boundaries of mobile technology and look forward to sharing more in this space.

To help celebrate the 50-year anniversary, we’ve commissioned the help of Argentinian illustrator, Costhanzo, to recreate 50 of our most iconic devices to date:

“Having been at Motorola for over 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to bear witness to many of these iconic innovations”, said Sergio Buniac, President of Motorola. “Innovation is in our DNA. We’ve revolutionized the industry countless times and we’re eager to continue to play this pivotal role in shaping the industry’s future.”

Be sure to follow along on Instagram (@motorolaus), as we recreate the first call at iconic locations around Chicago, and be the first to find us for a chance to win Motorola devices, F1 & Bulls swag, and more.
