5G technology: bringing the future of connectivity to the mid-tier

Looking back at the first half of this year, one thing is very clear: there is a distinct change in the way we work, the way we live and even more so in consumer buying behavior. While we all obviously had to adapt to a new way of doing business and interacting with colleagues, another major trend we’ve seen in this new normal is a shift in consumer priorities.

Increased streaming, online shopping and less in-person socializing have led to consumers’ growing need of having a reliable and quick way to virtually communicate on both a personal and professional level. And this change in the way consumers are working, socializing and even consuming products and services has forced us as technology providers to rethink how we can solve one of the biggest consumer pain points of today: staying connected.

Fortunately, we and the technology industry have already been diligently working to bring the next generation of connectivity into consumer’s hands for years. In 2019, we launched the first commercially available 5G device with the 5G moto mod – and since then we’ve launched several more 5G capable devices.

At Motorola, we’re committed to bringing the power of 5G into more consumers’ hands and believe that we can play a large role in the adoption of 5G capable solutions in the remainder of 2020. And while there’s no question that 5G is expanding worldwide, permeating new segments and industries, access to 5G solutions has been limited to select regions and consumer segments with a major obstacle being price point.

Part of our mission at Motorola is to democratize mobile technology, bringing top tier features down to more accessible price points. This is why, back in 2013, we created the mid-tier segment to revolutionize the mobile industry. We have a passion for using communications technology to bring individuals closer to the rest of the world, no matter their budget.

To demonstrate our commitment to the mid-tier segment, we launched the new moto g 5G plus in June – a perfect example of how we intend to bring the power of 5G to more people’s hands. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765, the device brings more accessible and advanced 5G connectivity to billions of smartphone users around the world at a price point more consumers can enjoy – under €400.

This marks a huge milestone for the industry and Motorola – and we’re not stopping here. In North America, 5G connectivity started with moto z4 and 5G moto mod, and again with the edge family which we launched this past April. To continue this mission, we recently launched the motorola one 5G in North America as well – a sub-$500 5G capable device.

Looking to the remainder of 2020, we will continue to listen to consumers’ changing needs and are confident that we can bring products to the market that will equip them with the right tools to face tomorrow’s challenges head-on. Beginning in May, motorola edge+ will be available in various countries across Europe, in UAE at Etisalat and du and in KSA at stc. In the coming months, motorola edge+ will begin to roll out in India and select Latin American markets.

United States

In the U.S., the new edge+ will be available exclusively on Verizon, starting May 14 for $41.66 a month for 24 months on Verizon Device Payment (0% APR; $999.99 retail).

Promotions:

Customers who get a new line of service on select Unlimited plans can save up to $550 on a new Motorola edge+ with an applicable trade-in.⁹Additionally, customers who switch from another carrier to a select Verizon Unlimited plan get a $150 Verizon e-gift card for a total savings of up to $700. That’s why the unique Endless Edge display on motorola edge and motorola edge+ is so much more than just a pretty feature. The curved display enabled us to create new software features that put the control in users hands and provide intuitive new ways to interact with their device. And of course, our edge features are integrated seamlessly into Android 10 for an optimal user experience.

You can customize your Endless Edge display easily within the Moto App. Simply click the menu icon in the upper lefthand corner to access different settings and make adjustments.

edge touch

Edge Touch, part of our new My UX suite of software features housed within the Moto App, allows you to customize new ways to interact with your device. Just swipe down the edge to show notifications, and swipe down again for settings. Swipe up to see recent apps, and up again to see the app tray. Swipe inward to pull up Edge Shortcuts, a small customizable box that gives you easy access to whatever apps, contacts, and tools you use most. You can even double tap to swap between the two most recent apps or turn the Endless Edge on and off.

The Endless Edge also enhances gaming, adding advanced controls that give you a console-like experience right on your smartphone. A new feature in Moto Gametime lets gamers activate two additional touch-enabled buttons on the top edge when holding the phone sideways, enabling four-finger gameplay. You can map these shoulder buttons anywhere on the screen, customizing control of the game for the way you like to play.

edge lighting

Edge functionality even improves the user experience when you´re not holding the phone in your hand. Users can customize their display edge to light up in different ways to show battery charging status, incoming calls, alarms, and notifications from across the room.

Overall, edge functionality delivers a more intuitive user experience that improves one-handed usability and lets you do things that simply aren´t possible on other smartphones. On April 6, 2020, the new razr received the coveted Red Dot: “Best of the Best” award, the highest distinction in the Red Dot Award Product Design category reserved for innovations with the most ground-breaking design. This year, designers and companies from 60 countries entered more than 6,500 products in the competition. At Motorola, we strive to innovate around the design and engineering of smartphones in order to create devices that meet the needs of consumers while also providing them with an element of surprise and delight. This extends across our entire portfolio of products but was most recently recognized by Red Dot for razr´s unique clamshell foldable design.

When we designed razr we set out to create the best smartphone that utilized flexible display technology and answered a real consumer pain point – the need for portability. Every decision throughout the development process was geared toward delivering a strikingly beautiful device with a totally unique, but totally practical, pocketable design.
